For the development of a country, its education level is a
critical factor. Therefore every country is investing considerable part from
the national income for the education. Normally every country increases that
level day by day. Although the education level is remaining in good level, that
portion is increasing, that how every government try to make strong people for
the country. How is in Sri Lanka ?, Sri Lanka in in a higher level compared to
other countries in the world. But the portion of the national income of Sri
Lanka is decreasing annually.
This article is not to make you aware of that situation, but
to inform you about a team of 200 people who had free education and try to keep
the free education safe for the future. I am happy to say that I am also one of
them. We are students of Faculty of Engineering, University of Ruhuna , Galle.
We met on 7th July 2008. Now our friendship is four years old. Every
year we could do some special thing to help to school children. We have helped
two schools closed to Galle.
We did our first work for our second anniversary (in 2010).
Badipita Kanishta Vidayalaya in Bogahagoda was our first school. It had so many
problems. Specially broken Drinking water pipes, children play grounds, dirty
walls. We could repair them within three days.
We worked day and night. We worked together. I think you know well how
the happiness of team work is.
The principal, teachers, students, parents and villagers
helped us. They ware with us. Especially teachers worked sprightly for it. They
supplied us foods and other facilities with villagers. Finally we could present
the school with bright full change. After all works we take permission to
present some presents to school children. After week we went there. We were
surprised. The students were standing in a raw from the gate to hall to welcome
us. And they have arranged a small function for us. It was small but nice.
Songs and dances of students were attractive. Special thing was there was two
special gest invited by the school. Mr. Gamini Kumaravithana was there. He is a
famous writer. And he spoke us.
Our second school was Akmimana, Attadassi viyalaya. It was
selected for our fourth anniversary celebration (2012). It was also a successful work. We started our
work on one Friday evening. We worked continuously more than 48 hours. Next
Monday there was completely different environment in the school. Students and
parents were surprised. They also had organized a small function to welcome us.
It was also attractive like the function of Badipita Vidyalaya.

These types’ works are not strange to students of Ruhuna
Engineering Faculty. We start our service as a sramadana campaign in Temple in
Hapugala in 2009. Our senior and junior brothers are doing and have done so
many social works. Our faculty is continuing those
works forward.
